South Side of Tray Mountain in an Acura MDX
Just a little while back I had returned to one of my favorite places in the world, the North Georgia Mountains, a place I have been exploring since I was 7 years old in 1989. Of course back then my ability to explore was rather limited, no drivers license, no car, and no way I could safely venture deep into the woods without the presence of an adult. But even back when I was learning the mountains and that knowledge still pays off today. My old car was a 2007 Hyundai Accent but I wrecked her last October. My new set of wheels is an Acura MDX which I purchased from my sister. Does not get nearly as good gas milage as the Accent but it is a step up in luxury and I figured if I am going to have 4 wheel drive why not take it on a few adventures. I rarely go up to the mountains in the winter but that mild February weekend was an exception due to both the weather as well as the presence of family members at my parents Lake Burton house.
This was my first time up in the mountains with the MDX. So I decided to stretch her legs. There is a road that begins as Chimney Mountain Road and turns into the Tray Mountain Trail. The further up you go the rougher it gets. I decided to take it very slow and in many places use my 4 wheel drive. Maybe I didn't quite have the same tires that those avid off-roaders have but I figured if I took it nice and slow that I would be okay, and indeed I was. I managed to climb Tray Mountain road in the MDX.
